University of Minnesota
University of Minnesota: Department of Mechanical Engineering

Research in mechanical engineering is at the forefront of solving some of the world's most pressing issues. The grand challenges in the areas of energy, human health, environment and transportation are core areas of our program.

Faculty members have received national and international recognition for work in solar energy, fluid power, particle technology, plasmas, and nanotechnology. The department houses world class research facilities including a Medical Devices Center, an NSF sponsored Engineering Research Center on Compact and Efficient Fluid Power, and an Intelligent Vehicles Laboratory.

Combined with our strengths in the traditional areas of mechanical engineering, including heat transfer and design and manufacturing, students can pursue a wide range of interdisciplinary topics.
